“Jean-Hugues Gros produces wines combining great quality and good value.”
Soil Specificity
The soils in the Douro Valley are made up of schist, a slate-like metamorphic rock. The numerous valleys, from Mesão Frio to the Spanish border are rich in nutrients with great water retention properties. The interstices of foliated schistose rock retain a large amount of humidity, allowing the vine to thrive in the arid conditions which prevail for most of the summer. The hard blue schist, in the Douro Superior, yellow schist or granite give the vines the ability to thrive well.

A Passionate Lineage
Odissea is a small estate in the Douro Valley established in 2004 by Jean-Hugues Gros, a young French wine maker. After years of international experience, Jean-Hugues decided to settle in the Douro region in 1999, where he works as consultant wine maker for various wineries. Five years later, he started his own “maison de negoce” under the Odisseia label. Grapes are sourced from the estates he follows as consultant, then vinified and aged in his own cellar in Vila Real. Today, Jean-Hugues is producer and also consultant winemaker for several Quintas of the Douro.
