“Josko Gravner produces serious and contemplative wines full of grace, defying easy characterisation.”
Soil Specificity
The soils in Friuli region vary from calcium rich marl and sandstone in the more hilly regions to clay, sand, and gravel in the valley. The region is comprised between the Alps, being the border with Austria, and the Adriatic Sea at the south. The northern half is very mountainous, so most of the vineyards are located in the southern half of the region, like Collio Goriziano, Colli Orientali del Friuli, Isonzo and Carso.
A Passionate Lineage
Gravner is a family business run by Josko Gravner. Many words have been used to describe this winemaker - Pioneer, Maverick, Visionary, Legend. But perhaps the word that captures his philosophy most succinctly is honesty. In his way of speaking, in his respect for the land and the vines in his care, in the expression of the grape through the wine. It was a desire for honestly that led him to abandon ultra-modern winemaking, for which he had become famous in the 70s. After much research, he came to adopt the ancient practice of fermentation in amphora with long periods of skin maceration and gave his wines extended barrel ageing before release.
