“Pierre and Jean Gonon are St. Joseph’s champions of traditionalism, creating outstanding and vibrant wines.”
The soils in the Rhone Valley are the result of a geological collision between the Massif Central and the Alps, creating the valley. This region can be split into two sub-regions, Northern and Southern Rhône. The granitic rocks of Northern Rhône are the consequences of volcanic activity in the Massif Central three hundred million years ago. From Vienne to Valence, granite soils and very narrow steep slopes over are making ideal the cultivation of Syrah on terraced vineyards, bordered by walls that retain the earth.
History / Ethos
Domaine Pierre Gonon is a family business with vines located on the best slopes of Mauves, in the very heart of the Saint-Joseph appellation. The steep 7 hectares in the historical appellation are farmed and vinified organically, in the old-school way, without any use of chemicals and all by hand. The brothers Pierre and Jean Gonon gained recognition for making very fine St-Joseph wines from their amazing terroir made of decomposed granite and calcareous limestone.
