“Stéphane Montez produces racy wines, always precise, full of flavours and character.”
The soils in the Rhone Valley are the result of a geological collision between the Massif Central and the Alps, creating the valley. This region can be split into two sub-regions, Northern and Southern Rhône. The granitic rocks of Northern Rhône are the consequences of volcanic activity in the Massif Central three hundred million years ago. From Vienne to Valence, granite soils and very narrow steep slopes over are making ideal the cultivation of Syrah on terraced vineyards, bordered by walls that retain the earth.
A Passionate Lineage
Domaine du Monteillet is a family business, sandwiched between the precipitous vineyard slopes that fall away to the Rhône River below and the imposing Mont du Pilat, which rises behind. The family has been making wine in the Northern Rhône for ten generations, although their rise to prominence really only began with Antoine Montez (Stéphane's father). Stéphane went abroad in different vineyards in order to learn new techniques. Here, wine making techniques remain at heart very pragmatic with each vintage bringing separate challenges. A great care is given to the work in the cellar to get the best of the perfectly grown grapes.
