“Nacho Léon focusses on artisanal production, a vigilant ageing, evoking traditional consumption tied to the local culture.”
The soils in Castilla Y Leon are influenced by their location within the central Iberian plateau. This region is wedged 700 meters above Sea level between the Cordillera Cantábrica and the Sistema Central mountains. In the mountains, soils are generally mineral-poor, eroded and acidic. The river valleys are alluvial, sandy-stony soils, medium dept, and little water retention. The plains have brown limestone, clay loam texture and low organic matter. The finest vineyards are found in the Duero Valley.
History / Ethos
Demencia is a collection of winemaking projects by Nacho Léon in Bierzo. Based around the towns of Villafranca del Bierzo and Villadecanes, they all seek to express the steeply-sloped, sandy terroir of the area. The ambition is to create great wines, based on the understanding of the vineyards, the terroirs and the native grapes of the Mencia varietal.Nacho avoids the use of chemicals in the vineyards, harvests by hand, and ferments and ages his wines in used oak in order to create complex, balanced and expressive wines.
