Soil Specificity
The soils in Toscana are formed from Pliocene and Pleistocene marine sediments, and from Quaternary alluvial and lacustrine deposits. The region is quite hilly, progressing inward to the Apennine Mountains. Here, many vineyards are planted on the higher elevations of the hillsides to benefit from a cooler weather. The soils composition lie mostly on clay, with a great level of nutrients and organic matter.
History / Ethos
Azienda Agricola Case Basse® di Gianfranco Soldera® located in Montalcino was founded in 1972 by Gianfranco Soldera. He is a pioneer of Brunello’s "new wave" - intensely concentrated, yet highly aromatic wine. With 7 hectares planted of Sangiovese, very low yields, and a traditional and natural approach, the wines are what Brunello di Montalcino always used to be. He left the Brunello DOCG in 2006 so all vintages from 2007 onwards are now labelled as IGT Toscana. Gianfranco Soldera has a profound respect for nature, which has always been his guiding principle in terms of viticulture, winemaking, and the way he lives his life.
